A few commenters alluded this event some weeks ago, but I received a press release today confirming a screening of the Chuck Berry documentary Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll at the Tivoli on Tuesday, May 12, in honor of his house being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 7:20 p.m. showing, which is just $5, is being sponsored by the Landmarks Association of St. Louis. More info below and after the jump.
Landmarks prepared the National Register nomination for Chuck Berry's former home at 3137 Whittier Street to heighten awareness of St. Louis' vibrant musical history and its ties to our built environment. Berry resided in the house with his family from 1950 to 1958, years which witnessed the beginnings of his musical development in St. Louis, his first recordings at Chess Records in Chicago, and the bulk of his early songwriting which forever impacted the course of popular music. The building was listed on the National Register on December 12, 2008 for its significance to American culture and performing arts.
Filmed in 1986, this much-storied documentary explores the fascinating, and often challenging, personality of St. Louis' own Father of Rock 'n' Roll and culminates in footage of his 60th birthday concert at the Fox Theatre. The film features interviews with Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Johnnie Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards (who served as its music director), and more to give a rare (and lively) insight into Berry's impact on the birth of this purely American musical genre.Landmarks is proud to be partnering with Vintage Vinyl which will be onsite selling Chuck Berry DVDs & CDs as well as offering Vintage Vinyl goodies & coupons. Door prizes include tickets to Landmark Theatres (Tivoli/Plaza Frontenac Cinema), Chuck Berry paraphernalia, and more
