Fun. has just announced a show scheduled for June 9 at the Pageant (6161 Delmar Boulevard, 314-726-6161). Tickets are $17.50 in advance and go on sale March 2 at 5 p.m. We think you should go. There are lots of reasons, one of which is the band's brand new LP Some Nights. It's helpfully streaming if you'd like a sample -- you can find it on the Fun. website or right here:

There are other reasons to think this will be fun. (sorry, sorry). Maybe you know this band from its gigantic single "We Are Young," featuring kindred spirit in life-affirmation Janelle Monae. Or maybe from frontman Nate Ruess' previous band, Arizona's the Format, which ruled.

I saw the Format in Kansas City several years ago at some kind of slapped-together awareness/benefit show for the victims of the Sudanese genocide. The bill comprised several local pop-punk acts and, by some miracle of last-second talent-buying, the Format. The only reference to the cause was when one of the openers' bassists stepped up to a mic and said, "The only place genocide is OK is on this stage," which remains the most inscrutable piece of banter I have ever heard.

But the Format was great, and Ruess is an exceptional stage presence. In response to propositions from the girls in the crowd he finally said, "You don't want to have my babies. I cry a lot."

This was a nice moment for its unexpectedness, but also because it speaks to several of the qualities we appreciate about Ruess as a songwriter, both with the Format and Fun.: Witty, earnest and completely without concern for being cool.
