The Ten Best Shows In St. Louis This Weekend: July 6 to 8

My word of the day calendar says today's word is "stymie," which is a word I was already plenty familiar with. Without the added push of new vocabulary, coming up with the introduction for this week's post has me in quite a stym...nah, nevermind, I'm not feeling it.

It's too damned hot outside. The weather website I frequent says Monday is supposed to be in the 80s, finally, which means that if you survive this weekend of shows in the 100+ heat, you will be rewarded with heat less oppressive. Hope is an adequate substitute for clever introductory words, I hope.

This weekend Fair St. Louis continues, with the only fireworks game in town and an appearance Saturday night by Dierks Bentley. Juvenile is playing a free show at the Ambassador on Friday night -- that's right; it's free. Murphy Lee is doing an "unplugged" set at Plush on Saturday. We aren't positive what that means, but here's hoping Murph is unleashing some old-timey folk jams or something. Quoth RFT Music editor Kiernan Maletsky, "That would be, without hyperbole, the best thing ever." The rest of our picks follow.

Friday:

G. Love @ Blueberry Hill 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. | $25 Garrett "G. Love" Dutton returns to town without his backing band Special Sauce. Last time he came he played the Pageant, so this time around can be seen as a more "intimate" affair. (DH)

Juvenile @ Ambassador 8:00 p.m. | Free Juvenile just released his tenth studio album Rejuvenation in June, ha. This free Ambassador show was just announced this week, ha. Remember when Juvenile released that one song that rhymed every line with the word "Ha", ha? Well we do. Oh, yeah, "ha." (DH) (Ha.)

Without Motherfucking Order @ Lemmons w/ Beach Bum Alcoholics 11:55 p.m. | $5 We've recommended them before, but the local GG Allin lovers in Without Motherfucking Order are worth noting again. The last set by WMFO involved a cheese grater, barbed wire, a Seattle Seahawks football helmet, a tazer, a trashcan lid and a horse whip, all used to send vocalist and ex-amateur wrestler Captain Perverto into a world of pain for your amusement. (DH)

Saturday:

Drag The River @ The Firebird 8:00 p.m. | $10-$12 Colorado's Drag the River is an alt-country band formed in 1996 by All vocalist Chad Price. All? No, All! (DH)

Amy LaVere @ Off Broadway With Magic City, Bug Chaser and Red Mouth 8:00 p.m. | $8 Nashville's Amy LaVere anchors a bill of rowdy locals. Remember how you were just going to see Magic City next time? Don't do that. See it now. (KM)
