After two years of gutting, building, painting and cleaning, James and Brea McAnally will finally open the doors at the second reincarnation of the Luminary (2701 Cherokee Street), a brand-new 17,000-square-foot facility that serves as an arts incubator and music venue in south city. On Saturday, May 17, the Luminary will throw its grand-opening event to show everyone the space that will host a series of live music and more to come.

A couple of days before the big event, volunteers conscientiously sweep up construction dust while the McAnallys work on getting the stage's sound system installed. The space has certainly come a long way since we last saw it, and behind the husband-and-wife duo's restless optimistic expressions, it's easy to see they have their eyes on the prize.

Almost ironically, the sounds of modern-rock radio waft from an adjacent room as workers lay on the finishing touches to the framework. Starting next month, the Luminary will host a carefully curated calendar of concerts, including renowned acts Sylvan Esso and Fucked Up.

The Luminary's grand opening event this Saturday runs from 8 to 11 p.m. The evening's festivities are free and open to the public. Live music throughout the evening gets spun from local artists Evelque and DJ Air Bud (Aaron Stovall of So Many Dynamos). Visitors can also partake in a silent auction and art auction -- the latter featuring pieces by area artists as well as previous Luminary artists in residence. A cash bar is available.
