with some "big news" for the Republican candidate for Missouri's 3rd Congressional District (map here
According to a non-partisan report issued last week, Martin is now being pegged as a somewhat legitimate threat to unseat Democratic incumbent Russ Carnahan. I say "somewhat" because the survey from the Cook Political Report
still anticipates the predominately Democratic 3rd District to vote for Carnahan in November. Still, early on it shows that -- in Martin's words -- his campaign is "making progress."
Commenting about the Cook Report last week, Politico.com
wrote of Martin:
Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.), the brother of Missouri Senate
candidate Robin Carnahan, is suddenly facing his first tough reelection against
attorney Ed Martin, who starts the year with nearly as much campaign cash as the
incumbent. The Cook Report now rates the once-safe seat, formerly held by former
House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt, in "likely Democratic" territory.
Carnahan, btw, had $372,000 in his war chest at year end compared to Martin's $335,000. (View their campaign reports here
The Cook Political Report made 24 other "rating changes" last week for House races with many of those changes benefiting Republican candidates.
"I'm not sure what D.C.-based guys really 'know'," says Martin of the Cook report. "But it's always good
to be noticed!"
