Sheriff Oliver "Glenn" Boyer states that the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will again participate in fund raising events that benefit the Special Olympics, Back Stoppers and One Missing Link called "Battle of the Badges".
These fund raising events are police races which started in 2010 at the Missouri State Fair Speedway. The concept was brought about by a business owner and dirt track race car driver (Reid Millard) to first benefit the Special Olympics. Reid purchased several Ford Crown Victoria's that were either retired police cars or taxis. Reid contacted Law Enforcement Agencies around the state and proposed his idea. If the Agency agreed to participate, Reid would donate the cars.
The participating Law Enforcement Agency would prepare the vehicle for racing, gutting out the interior and adding a safety roll cage etc. Each agency was responsible for getting sponsors and putting graphics and numbers for their respective cars.
Each agency was given a goal of raising at least $1,500.00 for Special Olympics and bringing it to the event at the Missouri State Fair Speedway. The initial event attracted 21 different Law Enforcement Agencies from around the state. The single event raised over $30,000.00 dollars for "Special Olympics".
The event was such a success that two other races were planned for later in 2010. The first one was held at the I-55 Raceway in Pevely benefiting "Backstoppers". The second event was held at the Springfield Raceway in Springfield, Mo. with proceeds going to a local charity "One Missing Link".
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was represented in each of the events.
This year for 2011 the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office has added a second car and will now have two cars on the track for these charity events. The cars are numbered 1 and 2.
Car number 1 is driven by Lt. Patrick Hawkins and car number 2 is driven by Deputy Terry Dowell.
All work to the race cars is either donated or paid for through the sponsorship obtained from local businesses, no taxpayer money is spent to operate these cars.
The scheduled events for this year are as follows:
Saturday, July 23, 2011 Lake Ozark Speedway Eldon, Mo. Benefiting Special Olympics
Saturday, September 10th, 2011 I-55 Raceway Pevely, Mo. Benefiting Backstoppers
October 2011 (racing date not yet scheduled) Springfield Raceway Springfield, Mo. Benefiting One Missing Link
