A ten-year-old Belleville boy accidentally shot and killed his five-year-old brother yesterday while playing with a shotgun kept in the home.

An "extremely tragic accident" is how Belleville police chief William Clay described the incident.

A day earlier -- Tuesday -- three-year-old Daniel Metz of Maryland Heights fatally shot himself in the chest while playing with a handgun belonging to his father, a police officer. Maryland Heights police chief Tom O'Connor called that incident "a terrible thing" and a "shock."

The deaths this week follow a fatal shooting last week when a three-year-old girl in south St. Louis shot and killed herself while playing with a handgun found in her home. (A 13-year-old girl who also shot herself while playing with a gun discovered in her East St. Louis home is recovering from injuries.)

And while police officials lament the shootings and warn gun owners to store their weapons safely, one wonders: Where is the NRA? Why hasn't it spoken out against these shootings? Or, do these examples detract from its argument?
