David Humphreys, owner of the Joplin-based Tamko Building Products
, says he's lost faith in Kinder following allegations a former stripper and Penthouse Pet made against Kinder that first appeared in the Riverfront Times
"If I had known this about him I would not have supported him in the past," Humphreys told politico.com
But it doesn't end there. According to POLITICO, Humphreys has asked Kinder to return all his contributions, to resign from office and to not run for governor in 2012. Moreover, if Kinder does win the Republican nomination, Humphreys says he'll throw his weight behind Democratic incumbent Jay Nixon.
And that could be a mighty blow to Republican causes statewide. In 2010, Humphreys gave $1.31 million to Missouri GOP candidates and conservative causes in the state, according to campaign finance reports. Those 2010 gifts included $80,000 to the party and $40,000 to Kinder. His last gift to Kinder came June 3 of this year when he donated $25,000.
In total Humphreys has given $165,000 to Kinder's campaign in this cycle, accounting for six percent of the $2.72 million Kinder had raised through June 30.
has a call out to Humphreys for additional comment.
Meanwhile, the Missouri Republican Party continues to endorse Kinder for a gubernatorial bid despite the scandal that has tripped up Kinder's campaign before he even officially announced his intent to run. In an email mailed out to party supporters
this week, the executive director of the Missouri GOP, Lloyd Smith, parroted many of the same discredited conspiracy theories
After receiving information from the Lt. Governor's campaign and a thorough review of facts, it seems clear that the allegations recently reported are the work of clever manipulation by Democrat operatives in coordination with Democrat John Ross, a former Democrat candidate for Congress and occasional contributor for the Riverfront Times.
As the RFT
and other media outlets
have confirmed: Ross has never worked for the RFT
; he did not provide the RFT
with the photo of Kinder and Tammy Chapman
(the former exotic dancer); and Ross is anything but a Democratic operative. Nice try.RFT's Sarah Fenske contributed to his report.
A major Republican donor who this year alone contributed $125,000 to Peter Kinder's political campaign says he's pulling his support from the candidate.
