Their church as reportedly been vandalized
several times and burgled too, losing not only money but also a prized antique German Bible brought out for the Christmas holiday.
At last, the cops think they've caught up with the crook (or at least one of them).
Jacob Lenau, a 20-year-old from the 2700 block of Allen Avenue
, faces multiple counts of burglary, stealing and property damage for incidents at St. John's.
According to the probable cause statement, Lenau has already admitted
under interrogation to breaking into the church on September 12 and
making off with three computers and a printer.
He further confessed to
another burglary on December 11, when he took a safe that had gift
cards, blank checks, a check card, and some cash.
that Lenau is the guy who swiped the leather-bound Augsburg bible from
St. John's on December 21 (just four days before Christmas). It reportedly weighs
15 pounds and is a
century-and-a-half old. He allegedly pawned it on Antique Row for $30, but the book dealer found out about the burglary and called the police, who then managed to find Lenau.
His bond has been set at $75,000, according to Casenet, and he'll be arraigned this morning.
As for St. John's, an anonymous donor heard about all their troubles and has endowed them with funds for a security system.
