James Taranto, a highly controversial columnist for the Wall Street Journal went gunning for Senator Claire McCaskill this week, writing that she is participating in a "war on men" that is a part of "an effort to criminalize male sexuality."
If you're not up for the brain hurtiness it takes to handle this we understand. There's a bunch of really great posts just below this one! Read those!
Taranto takes issue with the fact that McCaskill is blocking the nomination of Lt. Gen. Susan Helms as vice commander of the Air Force Space Command. McCaskill stated that this is because Helms overturned the conviction of an Air Force captain for sexual assault against the advice of legal counsel. McCaskill has been extremely vocal about the problem of sexual assaults in the military, which a Pentagon survey found happened to as many as 26,000 service members in the last year. Here's what McCaskill's spokesman Drew Pusateri told the Huffington Post about her decision:
As the senator works to change the military justice system to better protect survivors of sexual assault and hold perpetrators accountable, she wants to ensure that cases in which commanders overturned jury verdicts against the advice of legal counsel are given the appropriate scrutiny.
Taranto writes that the Air Force captain, Matthew Herrera, showed a penchant for "sexual recklessness" but that was after a whole lot of victim blaming. He wrote a bunch of stuff. Read it here, if you must.
Beyond the specific details of Herrera's case and Helms' decision, Taranto writes that this is about "criminalizing male sexuality." Because all men love rape and to ask them to quit raping women is tantamount to persecution. Poor men. Poor, poor men can't even get their rape on in peace anymore. Here's a video, where he implies that women being equal to men is a problem:
Pusateri, McCaskill's spokesman, tells Daily RFT that she is currently "considering writing a response" to Taranto and may we just say, oh, please, please, please.
Taranto is entitled to his opinion. We are entitled to ours, which is that Taranto is a troll and that anyone who thinks systemic sexual violence should be tolerated is a terrible person.
