Gunman in Rolling Downtown Shootout Injures Two, Gets Charged with Assault

Two men were shot during a shootout that started at a gas station in the 1600 block of South Jefferson Avenue and continued all the way into the heart of St. Louis' downtown.

Jarel Mays, 23, of the 2600 block of Carolina, faces four counts of first-degree assault and four counts of armed criminal action for chasing and shooting four people in a car in a gun battle that stretched across several St. Louis neighborhoods just after midnight on Sunday.

Four people -- ages 21, 23, 25 and 27 -- were in the car when Mays started chasing and shooting them. The 23-year-old was shot in the back, and the 27-year-old was shot in the side. Both men are listed as in stable condition. The other two people were not injured, according to police.

St. Louis police first responded to calls about gunshots downtown at 18th and Market streets, but while they were investigating, another shooting call came from less than a mile away, at N. Tenth and Olive streets. Investigators found that the shootout started at a gas station in the 1600 block of Jefferson Avenue.

Mays is held on a $200,000 cash-only bond.

Officers responded to calls for shots fired in the area of 18th & Market. While officers where investigating, another call for a shooting in the area of N. 10th and Olive was received. Witnesses stated the suspect vehicle had started chasing and firing gunshots at the victim's vehicle in the 1600 block of S. Jefferson as they were leaving a gas station. Victim #1 suffered a gunshot wound to his back. He was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in stable condition. Victim #2 suffered a gunshot wound to his side. He was transported to a local hospital where his is listed in critical/stable condition. Victim #3 and Victim #4 were not injured. The suspect vehicle fled the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
