It's a real headscratcher, an acutely sad and critically important one: the ongoing misunderstanding and persecution of wolves. Despite the incontrovertible research and evidence put forth by wildlife biologists and other informed advocates of this noble animal, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed stripping federal protection from nearly all gray wolves in the lower 48. This "delisting" means the wolf would no longer qualify for Endangered Species status, which translates to open season on the animal via the rifles, traps and poison of the Western states' ranching and farming industries.
