  • Last Minute Gift Ideas for Chris Duncan, Richie Incognito, Albert Pujols and Other St. Louis Sports Personalities

It's tough being a St. Louis sporting figure these days. Whether you're calling out your players for poor play, making demands for an $11 million luxury, or just trying to make sense of what you just saw happen to your team, life is flat out hard. But you know what can make it all better? Why, a truly great Christmas present, that's what! I know there's nothing in the world that makes me feel more special than when someone takes the time to get me just the right gift. Of course, I know

  • Missouri Ranks Number 35 in Something! (That's Good News, Right? Wrong!)

Stuff sometimes conspires to make Unreal feel like a pretty dense Mensan. To combat Alzheimer's, we engage in iPhone calisthenics like Word Warp. But when we really want to stump ourself, we turn to the New York Times' Freakonomics blog. A recent installment involves an interactive map of the USA, a feature that always tends to make Unreal's baited pole bounce around in the water, and a poor showing by Missouri, which simultaneously satisfies our appetite for schadenfreude and gives us hives.Via

flickr.com/photos/ryanmftLet nobody say the administration of University of Missouri School of Journalism is out of touch with its students. These profs understand that lectures, the scourge of college students since the Middle Ages, are so, like, boring. Especially when they're at the ungodly hour of nine a.m.So, starting this fall, incoming Mizzou journalism students will be required to purchase an iPhone or an iPod touch. No, silly, not for texting their friends during boring lectures. It's s

I don't own an iPhone, and I also don't go clubbing. But if I did, I would totally download this awesome new app, iSnort. I mean, if it existed. There are a lot of hypotheticals here. Including the one that this would somehow help me fulfill my dual lifelong dreams of being able to forego sleep and also being supercool.

Dave Nelson is the author of the blog Beer, Wine and Whisky. He writes about wine for Gut Check every Tuesday.Wine is a daunting subject: tens of thousands of producers, located in unique microclimates all around the world, each creating between one and dozens of wines, each of which is different to some degree every year due to variation in the weather. How even to begin learning about it?The breadth and depth of the topic of "wine" make knowing it intimately outside the scope of all but a few

  • June Phone Showdown: Palm Pre vs. Apple iPhone

June is turning out to be a big month for gadget geeks. Last week Palm finally released its much anticipated new phone, the Pre which looks a lot like an iPhone with a slide out keyboard. It's no surprise, some of the same engineers who designed the first iPhone also worked on the Pre. Right now it's only available on the Sprint network but it's been rumored that Verizon will also carry the handset in six months. Is the Pre an iPhone killer? Time will tell. It will at least be a good contender i

  • Google Continues its Quest for World Domination with Google Voice

I finally got my Google Voice invite last week. Voice is Google's move into what has traditionally been the domain of the big telephone companies. The service is still in private beta, which means that you have to get an invite to try it out. It's very likely Google will roll out voice in a similar way they did with Gmail by allowing existing users to send out a few invites to their friends. But for now, the only way to try it is via direct invite from Google, which you can request at the Google

  • Are You Ready to Augment Your Reality? [Fun With iPhone]

Most people have heard of virtual reality and probably have at least some vague idea of what that is. But have you heard of augmented reality? Well it's coming to your iPhone 3gs this fall. In case you don't know what augmented reality is (and unless you're a sci-fi geek you probably don't) it's a heads up display for life ... Okay, maybe that's not a good way to explain it either. Perhaps it's best just to show you. Here is a video demo from a developer of one such app that will be available th

  • Foursquare Coming to St. Louis this Fall! ... Maybe.

The popular social location game Foursquare is coming to St. Louis this fall. At least, that's what one of its founders Dennis Crowley hopes. I've been hearing about Foursquare since the South by Southwest Interactive conference last spring where apparently it made a big impression on the attendees. It generated almost as much buzz as Twitter did in 2007. I attended that year and one of the reasons Twitter was so popular then was that it was a quick and easy way to let your friends know where

Photo by Marcin Wichary via FlickrIt's August. The economy is bad. Things are slow, but technology marches on. In spite of the global economic slowdown, there will still be plenty of new high-tech products to look forward to this fall. A lot of them will actually be cheaper (even Apple has lowered its prices) and a few things will actually be free, like the some of the new Google products. Here are ten things to look forward over the next few months:Google VoiceDid you get your invite yet? Se

  • Show Review Photos Setlist: Green Day and Franz Ferdinand at the Scottrade Center, Tuesday, August 11

Photo: Todd OwyoungFrom last night's show at the Scottrade Center. See more photos of Green Day last night. Caveat: I've been a Green Day fan since 1994 or so. And so I have a sneaking suspicion that last night's Scottrade Center show wasn't for me - even though the band ran through plenty of its bratty, jawing pop-punk hits. But then again, last night's show wasn't for new fans, either - at least, not the hordes of elementary-school-aged children there with their parents. How do I know

It takes photos, plays music and video, you can browse the web, it even catches criminals. What can't the iPhone do? Not much, apparently. Apple's iPhone store has been an incredible success -- 2.4 billion worth of success. Proving that the iPhone is way more than just a phone. It's the worlds first successful hand held computer. Here are a few random apps that have caught my eye recently. Some you may find useful, some ... not so much. Text PlusIs a free text messaging app. And by free, I don't

Today the COTUS (Commandante of the United States) indoctrinated the youth of America with a speech laden with socialist rhetoric. A few of those references were very apparent, while many more were extremely subtle -- part of the Obama administration's vast conspiracy to brainwash the nation through the use of subliminal messaging. But never fear! The Daily RFT is here to save you from falling victim to this nefarious plot. Following is Obama's prepared speech to school children with its

  • Apple Announcement a Big YAWNER

So, my guess was wrong about Apple releasing the Beatles catalog on iTunes. I'm not ashamed of that. It was a long shot. But I did get some things right about the Apple announcement and I was surprised by quite a few things, too. I was right about iTunes 9. That wasn't hard to guess. I haven't had a lot of time to explore the new version yet, but it seems they have tweaked the interface a little bit by adding some new sharing features. They've also changed the layout of the store quite a bit.

Last week Foursquare finally made its debut in St. Louis. That's a little later than co-founder Dennis Crowley told us back in July, but it is within his expectation of being available here by the end of October. Here is a little recap on what Foursquare is and what it does. Foursquare is a location based game that you can play with your phone. There is an iPhone app, an Android App and it works via a mobile website for other smart phones and you can also play via SMS text message on other non

Today is the day when St. Jobs comes down from the mountain and delivers his (Apple's) "latest creation" ... that's what the official Apple press release says anyway. Nothing about a tablet or anything, just "our latest creation." You would think that with all the hype about a tablet, that Apple has announced that they are releasing some sort of tablet computing device today. That's not so, they've never mentioned a tablet at all. (Which is not to say that they aren't releasing a tablet today.)G

  • Twitter Fight, Take Two: How Chipotle Uses Social Media

A few weeks back, virtual sparks flew when local restaurateurs clashed with a group of social media-packin' diners on Twitter. But while social-media exchanges can cause anger and hurt feelings, the medium can be a catalyst for discussing problems in the industry and ultimately bringing down the wall that has for so long separated the kitchen from the dining room. What happens when Twitter complaints are aimed at a large chain? Well, that depends on the chain. Chipotle Mexican Grill has
