  • Breaking: Three St. Louis Chefs Are James Beard Award Semifinalists

    The James Beard Foundation today announced the semifinalists (link PDF) for its restaurant and chef awards. Three St. Louis chefs made the cut in the "Best Chef: Midwest" category: Gerard Craft of Niche, Josh Galliano of Monarch and Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street Cafe. In addition, Mike Odette of the excellent Sycamore in Columbia, Mo., made the list. Five finalists in each category will be announced on March 23.

    A surprisingly busy Tuesday on the local restaurant front. First, Sauce Magazine scores a major scoop: Mixologist extraordinaire Ted Kilgore is leaving Monarch for the soon-to-open Niche Taste Bar, which replaces Veruca in the space adjacent to Gerard Craft's Niche.At Feast, George Mahe reports that the second location of Caito's Pizzeria at 10012 Manchester Road has closed.     Mike Sweeney of local beer blog STL Hops, which last week was named the inaugural winner of Riverfront Times Best Food and Drink Blog, has been hired to rework the beer menus at Gerard Craft's Niche, Taste by Niche and soon-to-open Brasserie by Niche.Sweeney tells me that at Niche and Taste, "Styles are going to be my most important thing."
