  • My Cardinals: Will Leitch, Blogger Superhero

Opening Day is finally here. Winter has loosened its grip on our little corner of the world (well, sort of, anyway), and spring is beginning to bloom. Our annual ritual of renewal and rebirth is a few scant moments away, after the months of waiting impatiently for it to arrive. I could give you a primer on this year's Cardinals team, complete with a hundred different acronyms being tossed around, but you've probably gotten enough of that already, both here and elsewhere. And let's face

  • St. Louis Legislator Vows to Sue State Should Welfare Provision Become Law

State Rep. Don CallowayI just got off the phone with State Representative Don Calloway (D - St. Louis County). Haven't heard of Mr. Calloway? You soon will. The freshman legislator is the savant who's filed a bill to finally change that embarrassing stretch of Interstate 70 known as the "Mark McGwire Highway" to the "Jack Buck Memorial Highway." Calloway (a former corporate attorney with Thompson Coburn who now works for the defense firm Sindel Sindel & Noble) has also filed legislation aime

  • My Cardinals: Tim Lane

This past year, over at Viva El Birdos, I wrote a post on Christmas Eve called "God Bless Us, Everyone." It wasn't about baseball, as is often the case with the things that I write, but about my own feelings at Christmas about, well, just life in general. I was pretty proud of the way the piece turned out, thought it actually said what I wanted it to say, which isn't always the case. A couple of days after I wrote it, I received a very nice e-mail from a man named Tim Lane. Mr. Lane is a Ca

  • Phillies Announcer Harry Kalas, 73, Dies Afer Collapse in Broadcast Booth

Harry Kalas, the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, was found unconscious earlier today in the Washington Nationals' broadcast booth, where he was preparing to work the Nats-Phillies game. He was taken to the hospital, where he later passed away. Cause of death is as yet unknown. The death of Mr. Kalas yet another step closer to the end of the broadcasting age, it seems. Of the great old broadcasters, only a couple are left. Vin Scully, out in Los Angeles, is the grand old man of them all

  • Baseball Announcer Catch-Phrases are Hopelessly Out of Date

Via InsideSTLImagine if you will, Mike Shannon as the color man for the NBA. Baseball announcers are delightfully, hopelessly behind the times when it comes to coining catch-phrases to describe the on-field action. So much so, that when young bucks and young Bucks try to roll out a new one-liner, America collectively cocks its head in disgusted curiosity. A few probably paraphrase Jack Buck and say to their friends, "I don't believe what I just heard."But with the excitement over the NBA playoff

  • Fire Destroys Home of Carole Buck, Widow of Cardinals Broadcaster Jack Buck

www.nab.orgJack BuckA fire early this morning ripped through the suburban St. Louis home of Carole Buck, widow of the late Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck. According to media reports, the fire awoke Buck's widow, Carole Buck, around 1 a.m. this morning. She called 911 herself and escaped the blaze unharmed. Several fire departments responded to the call and have apparently rendered the home at 11 Glenn Creek Lane in Ladue a total loss.View Larger MapCarole Buck's home at 11 Glenn Creek Lane -

  • Season's End

urbanprankster.comTonight, the Cardinals will begin their final series of the year. Well, final series of the regular season, anyway. Luckily, postseason baseball awaits for our boys in red this year, rather than the specter of another October spent rootrootrooting against the Cubbies. So am I sad to see the season end? Perhaps a bit wistful? Oh, come now. You should all know me better than that by now. I'm always sad and wistful, whether I have a reason to be or not.

  • St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame Confirms Blues' Place as City's Red-Headed Stepchild

Missing: Brian Sutter's teeth and more Blues players in the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame.Need more proof that St. Louis is a "baseball town"? Check out the names (below) of the athletes and broadcasters inducted yesterday to the inaugural class of the new St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame. Ten of the 24 inductees played for the Cardinals or grew up here and played for another MLB team. The sport with the next highest number of inductees was football, with four athletes earning a spot for their g
