  • Another Year Up in Smoke as Slay Unveils His '09 Legislative Agenda

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay announced his new legislative agenda recently on -- where else? -- his blog.  The tech-savvy mayor's wish list includes many of his perennial goals: additional charter schools, more local control of the police department and the retention of state tax credits for development. Slay also introduces a few new items, such as soliciting governor-elect Jay Nixon to create more inner-city jobs and asking for additional funding to help convicted felons re-enter society

  • Lawmaker Files Bill to Ban Red-Light Cameras in Missouri

State Senator Jim Lembke (R-St. Louis/St. Louis County) introduced a measure this week that would ban the use of red-light cameras in Missouri. If passed by the General Assembly and approved by Gov. Jay Nixon, Lembke's bill (SB 211) would become law in late August. A group calling itself Missourians Against Red Light Cameras (MARLC) is championing the bill. The organization was founded about six months ago by Webster University employee Jesse Irwin and ex-Gov. Matt Blunt's former chie

  • Is Governor Nixon Taking Cues From That Other Nixon -- "Tricky Dick"?

Wikimedia CommonsAs history has shown, Richard Milhous Nixon was an extremely paranoid man. The 37th president installed a secret taping system in the Oval Office that allowed him to record conversations and phone calls and then use those tapes to strong-arm anyone -- friend or foe -- who dared to go back on their word.  Nixon's tapes would also be his downfall. The so-called Smoking Gun tape released to federal investigators during the Watergate probe revealed that Nixon knew about the cov

  • Emergency Funding For Metro Clears One Hurdle, Faces More

The Missouri House this week approved spending $12 million in federal stimulus funds to alleviate budget cuts at cash strapped Metro. The bill (H.B. 22) -- part of a larger stimulus measure -- was defeated once in the House before passing on Monday. It now faces an uncertain battle in the Senate. It's unclear, too, what will happen when/if the bill in its current form reaches the governor's desk. Governor Jay Nixon has remained largely mum on the St. Louis transit agency's historic service cuts.

Last week, three men were gunned down shortly after leaving a concert at the nightclub at 325 S. 21st Street. Hours after the triple homicide, St. Louis Public Safety Director Charles Bryson closed the club for an invalid occupancy permit. Harry Truman and his "The Buck Stops Here" placard. Have you heard this one already? Matt Blunt's attorneys are asking the court to replace their client with Governor Jay Nixon in a lawsuit accusing the former governor of defamation and wrongful termination in the firing of political aide Scott Eckersley. Eckersley claims he was wrongly fired in 2007 after raising concerns that Blunt's office was not following the Sunshine Law in its e-mail practices. The former aide also claims he was defamed b

  • Rep. Russ Carnahan Files Legislation to Aid St. Louis Transit Agency

flickr.com/photos/stlphotobloggerU.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-St. Louis) filed a bill in Congress yesterday that would allow public transit agencies such as Metro to use federal transit funding for day-to-day operating expenses. Under current law, transit systems located in areas with more than 200,000 in population must use federal transit funds for capital improvements and not operating assistance. Carnahan's bill (H.R. 2746) would remove that barrier and allow transit systems of all sizes to us

  • Hear the One About the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Nazis?

The New York Times had an interesting story this weekend about the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) and its ongoing battle with racist groups that want to adopt highways. Last year the National Socialist Movement (the neo-Nazi group that rallied in St. Louis this past April) signed on to clean up a half-mile of highway near Springfield. In exchange for its volunteering, the state awarded the National Socialist Movement a sign. As the Times reports: ...states have little leeway when

Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder don't take no questions. Republican Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder loves cycling so much and now he's glad that Democratic Governor Jay Nixon does, too. At least that's the way Kinder put it Tuesday during a phone meeting with reporters. In a conference call Tuesday afternoon, Missouri's second-in-command gave a back-handed compliment to Nixon, whose administration froze on Wednesday funding for the bicycle race, which begins on September 7 in St. Louis and ends on Septem
