People are already buzzing -- for better or for worse -- about the Gargoyle's 2009 schedule. Let the chatter commence anew below, because the Wash U venue announced even more shows last week. Here's the complete schedule for next year, along with a video of party-starting electro-soul party-starters Ninjasonik, which is probably who I'm most excited to see. Okay, that's kind of a lie -- I also LOL'd for days at the idea that there's a band called Cerebral Ballzy. (I have cerebral palsy -- that e
In this week's paper, Mike Appelstein interviewed Tom of the Welsh septet Los Campesinos! This was my favorite bit:
Who's "the other Kurt"?
Tom: That's a really good story actually. While we were recording that song with John Goodmanson, we were talking with him. I think he was the first person to record Nirvana live on the radio before they got big. It basically revolved around a friend of his called Kurt who was going out with a girl. He was at a party, went upstairs and found his girlf
So imagine the scenario: You're sitting around a Lawrence, Kansas coffee shop, blissfully unaware that you're due to play across Missouri on KDHX that very moment. Such was Titus Andronicus' dilemma earlier Wednesday afternoon. It's to Titus Andronicus' credit that they not only made it to KDHX (eventually) and the Gargoyle within a reasonable time, but they apologized profusely onstage and attempted to make up for it with a ripping cover of the Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird." Somewhere, the Cramps'
You don't need to be a sociologist to know when a Happening is taking place. A line of concert-goers snaking outside Off Broadway's door is a good sign. A sold-out show on an unusually busy Tuesday is another one. On a night that featured concerts by Green Day, Diane Birch and Los Campesinos! (and, uh, Motley Crue's Crue Fest), show-goers jammed into the venue to catch Portland, Oregon's Blind Pilot, a sweet, modest sextet that updates the folk-rock tradition with well-placed flourishes of acous
The UK's Los Campesinos, San Francisco's Girls and Chicago's The Smith Westerns played a hot show at the Firebird last night. Photographer Nick Schnelle was there and has this photo slide show.Photo: Nick SchnelleLos Campesinos! From last night's show at the Firebird. See more photos from last night.
Local favorites Titus Andronicus -- seriously, this is the third time the band's been in town already this year! -- are at the Firebird tonight. Although the group's records are rather o-fi indie-pop, Keegan Hamilton's recap of last year's Pitchfork festival set and Mike Appelstein's review of TA's February appearance with Los Campesinos! draw the same conclusion: Titus Andronicus are a fantastic live act.MP3: Titus Andronicus, "Titus Andronicus"Openers the So So Glos are a good match for TA, if
Nick SchnelleGirls at the Firebird in AugustBuzzy San Francisco quartet Girls opened for Los Campesinos! at the Firebird back in August. That was your last chance (for now) to see 'em in such a small venue, however: The indie-shambling band is coming back to town and performing at the Gargoyle on February 7, 2010. Did anyone who saw the LC! show like the band? Its live show has been receiving some negative press as of late.
