  • The Big Bloody: Maggie O'Brien's Bartender Killed in Violent Night That Leaves Three Dead

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reports this morning that three people died from gunshot wounds in the city last night. Two of the deaths -- involving the murder of a downtown St. Louis bartender -- may be related. Police say that around 11:45 p.m. last night a white male bartender in his early 30s was shot during a robbery attempt at Maggie O'Brien's, at 20th & Market streets (just a block up the street from the scene of a grisly, triple homicide last month.)View Larger MapThe

Lemuel Antwan HoustonPolice have charged 22-year-old Lemuel Antwan Houston in the shooting death Tuesday of Centreville police officer Lt. Gregory Jonas. He is being held in undisclosed location to ensure his safety. Bond has

  • Spike in Murders in St. Louis Contradicts Drops in Other "Dangerous" Cities

Homicides in St. Louis jumped from 138 in 2007 to 167 last year, making 2008 the deadliest year in the 'Lou since 204 people lost their lives in 1995.Across the state, Kansas City also saw a surge in murders with homicides increasing from 94 in 2007 to 126 last year. Yet despite reports suggesting that an increase in killings is to be expected during these tough economic times, many U.S. cities actually saw homicides drop last year.

  • Conversation with the Chief: Dan Isom Discusses Towing Scandals, Gun Laws, Cops and Robbers

This morning St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Dan Isom invited a few reporters to meet with him to discuss his first few months on the job -- as well as anything else we wanted to talk about. I, for one, appreciate the chief's openness. Such an invite would be anathema to some of his predecessors at police headquarters.During the nearly hour-long meeting, Isom (who's recovering from a knee injury suffered during a charity basketball game) opined on everything from black-on-black crime to stat

  • St. Louis: Nation's Second Deadliest City in '08

flickr.com/photos/poohbahThe FBI came out with its 2008 crime statistics this week. And when it comes to murder rates, our fair city has a dubious distinction. St. Louis ranked second per capita last year in the number of homicides committed in the city, with 47 slayings per 100,000 people. Leading the ranking was New Orleans, which recorded 64 murders per 100,000 people last year. Yesterday the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department issued a release noting that homicides in the city as o

As of today (July 1) the year is half over. And according to numbers provided by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, homicides are down nearly 30 percent compared to 2008.  As of Monday (June 29), the police reported 60 murders in the city in 2009 compared with 85 by mid-year 2008. Given that clip, St. Louis would end up with 120 homicides in 2009, down from the 167 killings that occurred in the city during an extremely violent 2008.
