  • The Big Bloody: Maggie O'Brien's Bartender Killed in Violent Night That Leaves Three Dead

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reports this morning that three people died from gunshot wounds in the city last night. Two of the deaths -- involving the murder of a downtown St. Louis bartender -- may be related. Police say that around 11:45 p.m. last night a white male bartender in his early 30s was shot during a robbery attempt at Maggie O'Brien's, at 20th & Market streets (just a block up the street from the scene of a grisly, triple homicide last month.)View Larger MapThe

  • Overall Crime Down in St. Louis Despite Recession

Remember, back when our economy was only starting its swirl down the shitter, experts predicted a spike in crime due to a recession?Well, experts be damned: according to police department data crunched by the Daily RFT, overall crime in St. Louis City was actually lower in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same period last year. St. Louis's very own Richard Rosenfeld, professor of criminology at UMSL, published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times in March 2008, encouraging citizens in

flickr.com/photos/kingsdesignIf a bank robber robs a bank politely, is he still a bank robber?A Boone County jury had the pleasure of debating this philosophical issue last Thursday, July 17. The facts of the case were these:On August 28, 2008, Maurice Penny, Sr., walked into the Bank of America branch at 1729 W. Broadway in Columbia, lifted up his shirt, possibly to show off a gun, and handed a note to the teller. He left with $3,000 in cash, in $20, $50 and $100 bills, and the note, which the

  • Man in "Gangsta" T-shirt Robs Local Bank

Photos courtesy FBIWhat do you expect of a gangsta?I tend to ignore most breaking news releases asking the public for help tracking down armed robbers. But this one about a robbery today of a Commerce Bank in suburban Webster Groves is just too good to pass up  -- if only because of the "Gangsta" t-shirt the suspect chose to wear during the heist. My question: Was the novelty shop where the robber buys his clothes all out of t-shirts that say: "Bank Robber"? Read the FBI's breaking news
