The human voice, when wielded by a talent as startling as Meredith Monk
, is a marvel. Monk takes this mundane gift we all possess and wrings from it not just the expressive qualities commonly recognized as beautiful in music, but also all the textures and elasticity and possibility we take for granted every time we speak. Clicks, staccato pops, husky aspirations, keening moans, sibilant hisses, throaty growls Monk harnesses all of these sounds and more, crafting an evocative lexicon of sound and beauty that communicates in a way that completely bypasses rational understanding. This is the core of emotion, laid bare and burning for all to feel. Monk performs an evening of arresting, frightening and beautiful music at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Saint Louis Art Museum (314-721-0072 or www.slam.org
) in Forest Park. Tickets are $10 to $15.
