A New Song and Dance

The Nutcracker has traveled some miles since it was first performed in 1892. That debut production was a total flop among critics and audiences alike, but after George Balanchine's ultra-successful choreographic makeover in 1954, the ballet went on to become a world favorite during the Christmas season. The Imaginary Theatre Company continues the tradition with a new, non-balletic rendition of the E.T.A. Hoffman chestnut adapted by Sarah Brandt with music and lyrics by Neal Richardson. Imaginary Theatre Company presents The Nutcracker at 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday (December 20 and 21) in the Heagney Theatre at Nerinx Hall High School (530 East Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves; 314-968-4925 or www.repstl.org). Remaining tickets are $6.
