Advance and Be Recognized

All artists put something of themselves into their work. You can't always spot it on first glance, and there are times the artist doesn't know she's done it, either. But those clues are there, little subconscious confessions of the maker's current interests, obsessions, worries, hopes, whatever. For Identify Yourself, the new exhibition at the Craft Alliance (6640 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-725-1177 or www.craftalliance.org), juror Duane Reed sought art that featured these personal revelations not through portraiture or direct statements of identity, but through subtle cues in the art. Think of the title as a challenge to closely examine each piece in search of the person who made it — maybe you'll be right, and maybe you'll discover something about yourself during the investigation. Identify Yourself opens with a free public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 20. The work remains up through Sunday, July 3, and the gallery is open every day except Monday. Admission is free.
