Algorithms of the Damned

As many a technology-weary pundit has opined, the so-called artificial intelligence that was supposed to be the hallmark of our young century has only succeeded in making the world a more confusing place. The solutions to our problems may only be a search engine away, but the answers that result carry a whole host of quandaries. You could go back to Philosophy 101 to tackle these issues, but it would be more fun to visit the Answer Factory, a six-artist exhibition at the Luminary Center for the Arts (4900 Reber Place). The multimedia showcase features playful and maddening installations, from Cheryl Wassenaar's cut-up signage collage to Christian Kuras' Drone, a circle of megaphones communicating with one another; think of these pieces as logic systems on a closed loop, or flow charts that pose more problems than answers. Answer Factory opens with a free public reception at 6 p.m. Friday, September 10, and will be on display through October 9. The Luminary is open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; for more information visit
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Sept. 10. Continues through Oct. 9, 2010
