Phil and Jill Springer opened Flower Depot ten years ago in a historic building in the heart of St. Louis County's oldest commercial district. Not only did they help preserve a quaint corner of Church Street and Florissant Road in Ferguson's historic downtown, they added a spot of beauty to an area of the county long overrun by strip shopping centers, fast-food joints, Walgreens and quick-oil-change places. Flower Depot's 10,000 square feet are packed with flowers and gift items, including cards, stuffed animals, centerpieces and candles. There's always a wide selection of holiday-related items, including a staggering collection of Christmas ornaments and decorations. Yuletide centerpieces are a special treat: a lush collection of sprigs of fir, pine, holly and other evergreens, anchored by a tall scented candle. Flower Depot does a substantial wedding trade and serves some of the area's larger hotels. In 1999, the business won citywide recognition for decorating the stage at America's Center when Pope John Paul II said Mass.
