Rams Drafting Michael Sam

Everyone got to know Michael Sam this summer. The nation cheered along when the Mizzou All-American became the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team — but alas, he was cut from the St. Louis Rams' final 53-man roster. In retrospect, this move might feel like a heartbreaker — but it's not. His career is far from over; injuries serve to push talented sixth and seventh rounders (like Sam) to other teams when their starters go down. Sure, we won't see the broad-smiling rookie wearing a Rams jersey this season — but so what? By drafting Sam, the Rams general manager Les Snead and head coach Jeff Fisher stamped St. Louis in the gridiron history books, and nothing can erase that. Who knows? We may still see Sam rocking the gold and blue some day. Ask Kurt Warner. Stranger things have happened.
