Beyond the Hunger Games

It’s difficult to overemphasize the popularity of dystopian fiction in the young-adult book market -- and how YA books don’t really confine themselves to that demographic. Apocalyptic adventure books in tyrannical societies where young people become unlikely heroes are huge with readers of all ages: rebellion against mass extinction, preprogrammed destinies, technological Armageddon and mutation rule the day. But that’s fantasy -- what can it say about the way we live now? Four authors take the stage at the Ethical Society (9001 Clayton Road, Ladue) this Monday, July 9, at 7 p.m. (doors open at six) for the aptly named Dark Days Tour. Veronica Roth, Aprilynne Pike, S.J. Kincaid and Dan Wells will discuss their books and the shape of things to come. Books will be available for purchase at this free event; for more information, visit www.left-bank.com.
