Brian Regan

7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14. The Pageant, 6161 Delmar Boulevard.

Few standups can sell out theaters wherever they roam, but who else besides Brian Regan has been doing it — six years running — without the aid of Saturday Night Live or a comedy blockbuster? By turns snarky wisecracker and bellowing doofus, Regan has minted his own brand of comedy so universal you might dare call it Cosby-esque (interestingly, the same edgy alt-comics who revere "The Coz" also give props to Regan). His shtick is observational, and like his early mentor, Jerry Seinfeld, he mines the mundane for laughs. On his most recent album, All By Myself, things have gotten personal: Now he's confused by his aching old body, his kids, "texting" in general. That's just a summary; the real entertainment is being in a room with this guy.
