Ooh, goody! Everyone's invited to a birthday party at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 4, — and you just love parties! So head down to Belas Artes (1854 Russell Boulevard; 314-772-2787 or www.belas-artes.net), a multicultural café and gallery, for local artist Christopher Schulte's 50th birthday celebration/art opening, Life's Choices: A Journey to 50. This exhibit showcases two- and three-dimensional artworks in media including porcelain, steel, slate and paper; in his artist statement, Schulte explains how these elements all accomplish a common goal: "The mosaics and organic images that take shape in my work blend all of the fragmentary elements of my world and existence into a celebration of being." And that's what you'll be doing on Friday — participating in a "celebration of being" (or, you know, partying down). The opening lasts until 9 p.m., but the show remains up through Sunday, September 17. And don't worry about bringing a gift: Schulte would just be happy if you donated money to an organization that assists people living with HIV/AIDS or supports members of the LGBT community.
