Jonathan Richman led the proto-punks in the Modern Lovers. Arto Lindsay gave us the avant-pop of the Ambitious Lovers. A Philadelphia power-pop quartet upped the ante by calling themselves the Bigger Lovers. The Vancouver-based quintet Clumsy Lovers
may not have as boastful a name as the others, but they rarely sound clumsy on their most recent album, Smart Kid
. The band uses all acoustic instruments (fiddle, mandolin, banjo) and mixes in elements of folk, bluegrass and Celtic music, but these are simply pop-rock songs performed without amplification.
