Cold Comfort

There are many home remedies for the New Year's Day hangover, but nothing beats a nice cold shower and a big breakfast. You're on your own for breakfast, but the cold water is in plentiful supply at the 2013 Polar Plunge. This benefit for Hope Rescues Animal Shelter, a no-kill shelter in Alton, features happy volunteers wading into an unheated river in exchange for financial pledges. This is the third year for the event, and the organizers are going big: The goal this year is an impressive $5,000. You can do your part by either collecting pledges and taking a dip yourself, or you can stand on the shore, well-bundled up, and make a donation at the event. Online donations can also be made directly to the shelter. Get freezin' for a reason at noon today at Gordon Moore Park (10 Parker Lane, Alton, Illinois; www.hoperescues.com).
