Oklahoma, one of the most reactionary states in the union, has given rise to a handful of the most notoriously progressive rock bands. Colourmusic raises again the freak flag of the Flaming Lips and Starlight Mints on the taut steel cords of post-industrial art noise, with much of its fellow Okies' radio-friendly threads shredded without mercy. The latest and most difficult release from Ryan Hendrix, Nick Turner and company, My_____ Is Pink, continues their obsession with color theory and virtuoso experiments — worldbeat gets colonized, speed-metal gets slammed, orchestral maneuvers get damaged in the dark — resulting in the kind of album Animal Collective might make if it had grown up with red dirt in its lungs and spent its adult years coughing up metal-machined musique concrete.
