Dark Knight by Night

Join the Moolah cult

Sean McElroy works at the Moolah Theatre and Lounge (3821 Lindell Boulevard; 314-446-6868 or www.stlouiscinemas.com/moolah), and he sounds like he’s the luckiest guy in the world. Why? Because he’s a movie junkie and he works at a movie theater, for starters. But more importantly, the management has turned the projector over to McElroy and his cadre of cinematic “superdorks” (his word) so that they can engage in a labor of love every Friday and Saturday: the screening of Midnight Cult Films. These are movies selected by people who love movies unabashedly and with non-ironic glee; these are our people. Throw in drink specials, a pre-show trivia contest and what McElroy promises is “an amazing, geek-selected vintage trailer reel” and you have cinematic paradise at 24 frames per second. Tim Burton’s gorgeous-to-look-at-but-Michael-Keaton-infected-Batman is the film for this week (July 18 and 19) – it’s an arty but flawed interpretation of the Dark Knight that has some fine moments. And admission is only $6. PHOTO COPYRIGHT WARNER BROTHERS
