Right about now, the ubiquity of holiday music almost ruins the specialness of it. Seriously, how many times can a person hear "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" in a single day before losing one's mind? Magnificat by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is the perfect antidote to pop holiday tunes. This work, composed in 1989, lends a certain weightiness and thoughtfulness to the season, and it will be sung as part of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus' holiday concert, An Old World Christmas. This performance also includes the world premiere of Christbaum composed by Sasha Johnson Manning, along with Franz Biebl's Ave Maria and other carols from Europe. To hear these magnificent works in a most stunning space, arrive at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis (4431 Lindell Boulevard) at 3 p.m. Tickets to the concert cost $10 to $30 through MetroTix (314-534-1111 or www.metrotix.com).
