Fairy Thee Well

In addition to discount-crazed shoppers elbowing their way through a sea of buy-one-get-one gimmicks and sale-of-the-century claims, something a bit more urbane occurs this Black Friday on the main level of the Saint Louis Galleria (South Brentwood Boulevard and Clayton Road, Richmond Heights; 314-863-6633 or www.saintlouisgalleria.com). Performers from Alexandra Ballet (www.alexandraballet.com) pirouette and twirl for a crowd of children fascinated by a classic dance form and enchanted by a glimpse of glittering tutus. Called Sugar Plum Parties, these gatherings commence with treats and a holiday activity followed by a shortened performance of The Nutcracker, the beloved tale of one child's somewhat-bizarre sojourn in the Land of Sweets. Narrated by local storyteller Karen Young, the 50-minute version will be just enough to give little ones a taste of this holiday tradition. Come to any one of the three free performances at 9:15 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. in Macy's Court; the area can accommodate about 100 children, and seating is on a first-come basis.
