Laura Dekker gained a modicum of fame at age sixteen when she announced her intent to circumnavigate the world by boat, alone. For a girl who was literally born at sea and raised on a ship, this was a natural desire, but adults and the Dutch government had concerns. Dekker eventually succeeded in starting her journey and filmed a video diary of her expedition. These films, and several interviews with Dekker before and after the trip, comprise Jillian Schlesinger's documentary Maidentrip
. The film is both a chronicle of Dekker's voyage around the world, and also one of her own coming of age. Maidentrip
screens at 7:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday (March 14 through 16) at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-968-7487 or www.webster.edu/filmseries
). Tickets are $4 to $6.
