In the past this category was just one of many, a pleasing little diversion. This year, French fries are a political item, restaurants and diners all over the U.S. curiously changing their menus to reflect displeasure with a certain Western European nation. If the French did invent these fries, though, we owe them thanks, eternal thanks. There's no food that captures the title of "King Side Item" quite like the fry. Tinged with grease and salt, the French fry is that guilty pleasure that never loses that special appeal. Let politicians fight about politics, pass the ketchup, please!
