Garrison Starr/Rhett Miller

Tuesday, April 18, at 8 p.m. The Gargoyle on the campus of Washington University (Forsyth and Skinker boulevards)

While many wide-eyed young musicians set out for Nashville, singer-songwriter Garrison Starr began her career on the grittier — yet just as vital — streets of Memphis. Her early success might be credited to "Superhero," a jangly pop hit that earned nationwide appreciation, but it's Starr's Southern-spitfire stage presence that keeps fans coming back. With a warm smile and quick wit, Starr chats up the audience between her confessional (but often straight-up rocking) songs. Starr's truest talent lies in her songwriting, so it'll be a pleasure to see her perform with equally talented tale-spinner (and Old 97's heartthrob) Rhett Miller.
