Vincent Price's acting career began in the theater and ended more than a half century later with an acclaimed one-man show, so it's fitting that in honor of his 100th birthday, his 100th film, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, is being adapted for the stage as part of St. Louis' Vincentennial celebration. In the film, theologist-slash-organist Phibes exacts revenge on those he believes responsible for the death of his wife, taking inspiration from the Old Testament's ten plagues of Egypt. Dr. Phibes is one Vincent's best movies, renowned for his bizarre performance, a surreal "mod" 1920s atmosphere and "groovy" art-deco sets. Magic Smoking Monkey Theatre performs The Abominable Dr. Phibes — in 3-D! at 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday (May 13 through 21) at the Regional Arts Commission (6128 Delmar Boulevard). In the spirit of William Castle, another of Price's famed directors, Phibes is presented in Monkeyvision 3-D — an "amazing new innovation, which makes the actors appear as if they are actually in the theater, right in front of your very eyes!" Tickets are $10 to $15, and seats are limited, so reservations are encouraged; call 800-838-3006 or visit www.stlshakespeare.org.
Fridays, Saturdays. Starts: May 13. Continues through May 21, 2011
