Common sewing thread is one of the flimsier materials an artist can use, yet Gabriel Dawe makes it seem simultaneously opaque and filmy. For his installation Plexus no. 8
, Dawe stretches massive amounts of thread in sheets of color from floor to ceiling, constructing rainbow-hued shapes that appear to be walls from one angle, and a floating haze of muted colors from another. Gabriel Dawe: Plexus no. 8
opens with a free public reception from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at the Luminary Center for the Arts (4900 Reber Place; www.theluminaryarts.com
), which happens to overlap nicely with the City Wide Open Studio Tour. If you miss it during the opening, Plexus No. 8
remains up through Saturday, August 27; the gallery is open noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: July 30. Continues through Aug. 27, 2011
