Carol is a college student early in her academic career. Struggling in a class, she seeks out her professor, John, for help during office hours. John's well on his way down the tenure track, experienced and recognized in his field of study. Their meeting should be your standard student-teacher conference, but in the hands of playwright David Mamet it mutates into Oleanna
, a fraught exploration of privilege, entitlement and sexual politics. Is a professor's hand draped across a student's shoulder a symbol of camaraderie, or an unwanted sexual advance? That depends on whom you ask -- and maybe some other things. HotCity Theatre presents Oleanna
at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday (January 20 through February 4), with matinees at 3 p.m. Saturday (January 27 through February 4). Performances are at the Kranzberg Arts Center (501 North Grand Boulevard; 314-289-4063 or www.hotcitytheatre.org
), and tickets are $15 to $25.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 20. Continues through Feb. 4, 2012
