As a singer-songwriter living and working in New York, Luke Temple had achieved success in the densely populated sensitive-dude-with-a-guitar market. Temple found more acclaim with his polychromatic five-piece band Here We Go Magic, a group that takes indie-pop to a better place by pushing sonic boundaries and tightening the rhythmic reins. The drifting loop-like repetitions and hazy campfire vocals recall a less lysergic Animal Collective, and the steady thump of motorik drumbeats suggests a kinder, gentler Krautrock. With Temple's high, sweet vocals and the band's tightly wound rhythms, Here We Go Magic occupies the same niche for refined, studied indie rock as the Sea and Cake. The band's newest collection, The January EP, hits stores next week, but you can hear a preview at Saturday's show.
