No amount of cultural archeology can fully explain the phenomenon of Pee-wee Herman, but suffice to say that there have been few entertainers like Paul Reubens' alter ego before or since. Pee-wee's whimsical, borderline unhinged persona was eventually styled into a kid-friendly figure, but his appeal always skewed older. His feature-length debut film Pee-wee's Big Adventure captures much of the character's oddball charm. After the theft his beloved bicycle, Pee-wee sets off on a cross-country trip to reclaim it, encountering all manner of characters (and uttering some endlessly quotable lines) along the way. The film screens at the amphitheater at Laumeier Sculpture Park (12580 Rott Road, Sunset Hills) as part of park's the Music+Movies series. Local funkateers Boogie Chyld will perform at 7 p.m., and the movie begins at 8:30 p.m. For more information, call 314-615-5278 or visit www.laumeiersculpturepark.org. And when you go to Laumeier, be sure and tell 'em Large Marge sent ya.
