Hey, What's That Sound from the Pavement?

After a quarter-century of tours and Jellicle Balls, it's hard to believe that there could be anyone in America who hasn't heard of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats. But then you remember that most kids these days are younger than 25. And if you have a kid, you know that this week off from school can be trying for both parent and child. Lots of time to fill, not a lot to do. So, how 'bout a trip to the theater for a first taste of Theatre? Cats takes the Fox Theatre (527 North Grand Boulevard; www.fabulousfox.com or 314-534-1111) stage at 7:30 p.m., and it's a pretty good first musical. The revue format is easy to follow, there's plenty of spectacle and song, and singin' cats are a proven crowd-pleaser. Throw in the free face-painting for kids provided by the Fox staff in the lobby one hour before showtime, and you have an exciting big night out for you and the kids. Tickets are $18 to $52, and the show continues through Sunday, December 31.
