Now hailed as the beginning of French New Wave, Alain Resnais' 1959 film Hiroshima mon amour is an impossibly beautiful examination of the complexity of being human. World War II and the bombings of Hiroshima serve not as a backdrop to the protagonists' relationship, but as a mirror of the tenuous grasp humanity had on its senses in the years after the war. The nameless subjects, He (Eiji Okada) and She (Emmanuelle Riva), argue and reflect on the rise and fall of their complicated love affair between cuts of past, often traumatic, experiences and memories of 1950s France and Japan. Hiroshima mon amour screens as part of the St. Louis International Film Festival.
