How 'Bout Some New Shorts?

Stray Dog Theatre recently wrapped up its tenth season, but that doesn't mean it's done presenting shows. This weekend, SDT's New Works Laboratory is in session with Complicated Lives: An Evening of Short Plays. The four plays in question -- "The Dock," "Peeping," "On Solid Ground" and "Tangled Mess" -- are all written and directed by Stephen Peirick, whom you saw in Stray Dog's towering run of Angels in America if you were smart. Peirick's Wake Up, Cameron Dobbs was staged by West End Player's Guild last year, and it was a sharp and funny comedy that showed a great deal of promise. The four pieces here are all newer, and involve a bit of voluntary audience participation; once the show is over, Peirick and artistic director Gary F. Bell will field questions and commentary about the plays. Performances take place at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (August 22 through 24) at Tower Grove Abbey (2336 Tennessee Avenue; 314-865-1995 or www.straydogtheatre.org). Admission is free.
