If You Believe the Pen's Mightier

Then you'll grow up to be a playwrighta

Talk about fifteen minutes of fame. The tenth annual WiseWrite Festival of One-Act Plays treats its fifth-grade authors with a respect amounting to adulation. Each budding playwright is given a special perch of honor from which to watch the performance. Then, he or she, as the case may be (and there are plenty of both), takes to the stage to be photographed with the cast. Would that all writers received such loving attention. WiseWrite, a partnership between the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and Springboard to Learning, allows young writers to see their works staged and acted by some of the area's best talent. Tickets are free, and no reservations are required, so what are you waiting for? To learn what's on the minds of today's youngsters is theater at its most surprising, and sometimes even at its most memorable. The festival plays out today, starting at 9:30 a.m., on the mainstage at the Rep (in the Loretto-Hilton Center, 130 Edgar Road, Webster Groves; 314-289-4120 or www.springboardtolearning.com), and it's over when it's over. It's a very informal event, so don't worry if you're a little late. Oh yeah, one more thing: Bring your own sack lunch.
