Social Security Four wooden "gallery kits" — the approximately seven-foot-square minigalleries designed by Daniel McGrath and Dana Turkovic for their Isolation Room project — fill the Luminary nearly to capacity, each displaying a small exhibition representative of a recently expired or reincarnated local alternative art space: Cosign Projects, Los Caminos, Pig Slop, PSTL Gallery and, in a window display, Proper Gallery. Shows within a show, each kit houses a small exhibit curated by its respective collaborator: mournful black flags by Lauren Adams at Cosign; elegant new sculptures by Bruce Burton at Los Caminos; drawings and ephemera by the Pig Slop crew; a miniature survey (i.e., a scale model with tiny, to-scale artwork) of all the artists who exhibited at PSTL; and an installation by Raleigh Gardiner and Evan Crankshaw for Proper Gallery. Each space has its own charm and merit, and taken as a whole the exhibit underscores a vital point: In a small creative community, ephemeral alternative spaces play an invaluable role. Encouraging risk and experimentation and creating room for artwork, artists and projects that swerve firmly away from conventional and/or commercial modes, they assert that with the merest budget, will and effort anything can happen — and that "anything" often turns out to be the most interesting thing around.
