Throughout the '70s, disaster ruled the skies and the box office. Airport, starring Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin and Helen Hayes, put an all-star cast in peril and became one of the most influential films of the decade. Airport 1975 put Charlton Heston in the cockpit and Airport '77 kept the star power coming with Jack Lemmon and James Stewart. But by the time The Concorde...Airport '79 hit theaters, the cast resembled Love Boat passengers, with Jimmie Walker and Charo "starring" as passengers on a doomed Concorde flight (piloted by series regular, George Kennedy). Fittingly, these disaster films were a perfect match for Super-8, the home movie format of the decade. Super-8 reels average fifteen-minute run times, so they zip through the set-up and get right to the mayhem. Tonight, the Way Out Club (2525 South Jefferson Avenue; www.myspace.com/wayoutclub) hosts Super-8: Airplane Madness featuring all four Airport films, topped off with the 1980s spoof Airplane! Tickets are just $3, and departure time is 8 p.m. sharp.
