Lemuria

2 p.m. Saturday, January 9. The Sci-Fi Lounge, 6010 Kingsbury Avenue.

Buffalo, New York, has given the world a number of less-than-stellar musical contributions. The Goo Goo Dolls? Yup, that's Buffalo's fault. Rick James? Chalk that one up to the City of Good Neighbors, too. Oh, and let's not forget pop-punk footnote Cute Is What We Aim For. (On second thought, let's forget it. As fast as possible.) Luckily, the Nickel City has turned it around in recent years, spitting out everything from the topnotch metalcore act Every Time I Die to fantastic indie-power-pop trio Lemuria. Led by diminutive frontwoman Sheena Ozzella, the band — completed by drummer Alex Kerns and new bassist Kyle Paton — is helping bring back a style of indie rock popularized by '90s groups such as Sebadoh, the Lemonheads and Velocity Girl. By mixing these influences with elements from modern acts such as the Weakerthans and Rainer Maria, Lemuria crafts powerful punk-pop concoctions all its own.
