If you know anyone with a home garden or a CSA share, chances are you’ve been offered a tomato or ten this summer. The juicy red fruit is everywhere this time of year, and that’s a good thing -- few foods are so versatile or delicious. So it's only natural that Iron Barley (5510 Virginia Avenue; 314-351-4500), that venerable, beloved eatery tucked away on the city’s south side, makes a yearly tribute to the beloved nightshade with its Tomato Fest
. Now in its eighth year, the fest finds new and exciting uses for those plump red suckers, and chef Tom Coghill always thinks big: Last year, he and his staff made the world’s largest BLT, with 600 pounds of bacon and 550 pounds of tomatoes. All this gluttony is for a good cause -- Tomato Fest is in benefit of the Lift for Life Academy. The event kicks off at 2 p.m., and local folk acts the High Dives and Boss Hall will perform throughout the day.
